New year Gifts to my family

Around Dussehra celebrations, a new entrant in the fruit market can be seen, popularly known as Singhara. Actually I was not aware of the English name for our very humble Mr. Singhara, thanks to google, finally I know that its called as 'WATER CHESTNUT'.  The Singharas lying in the fruit basket made me search what benefits it offers to us. These days I have developed this habit of finding out the nutritions of everything I give to my family and to my child. After researching benefits, here comes Water Chestnut aka Singhara, though my girl doesn't even look at them.
Right from the childhood days I have eaten and relished the boiled version of it, was never a fan of raw Singhara. At times, my mom used to cook curry of the raw singharas which was yum, and why not since mom was cooking it. I for sure don't know how to prepare it.

I have seen Singhara plants growing in the pond near to my city, at a place called 'UDAYGIRI'  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udayagiri_Caves .
There used to be a pond in-front of these caves where Singharas were cultivated. Have witnessed the people wading in the pond, and picking Singharas from these aquatic plants. The raw singharas are green(light or dark both can be) in colour, and sometimes Magenta. The outer covering of it is hard, which needs to be removed before eating the nut inside it.  Singhara is mostly kind of triangular in shape. The local market had both versions available, the raw as well as boiled.
When boiled, these green/magenta beauties become black in colour. As far as the taste goes, the raw ones are crunchy to eat, while the boiled ones loose a bit of it.

Singhara is very nutritional, fat free and low in calories. It is easily available with the roadside hawkers, and is cheap. During fasts, it can be consumed undoubtedly. Singhara is available only during the winter season in India, which lasts about 3-4 months, whereas the Singhara flour (Kuttu Atta) is available in the market all year round. Pudding (Halwa) can be made of this flour and can be eaten during fasting(navratras are never complete without the yummy singhara halwa at my mom's place).
So now, what are the benefits of our Mr. Singhara. Here we go:
1) Singhara is rich in Potassium and helps in lowering the blood pressure.
2) It is a rich source of Proteins, Carbohydrates, Vitamin B,C, Iron, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Iodine, Zinc, and Fibers.
Attached is the Nutrition Chart for Water Chestnut

As visible from the chart, Singhara is high in calories and quite low in fats, hence can be eaten in moderate quantities without worrying about weight gain. People who are obese shouldn't eat it much due to its high carbohydrate content.
3) Diabetic patients can also have this fruit.
4) Singhara has antioxidants and vitamins which is good for skin, preventing wrinkles and skin dryness making skin healthy and glowing. It also provides nutritions such as potassium, zinc, and vitamins which remove the toxins harmful for the hairs, thus help in getting healthy hairs.
5) Eating Halwa (pudding prepared with ghee) of singhara atta helps in gaining weight, for who are thin and want to put on.
6) Singhara consumed either as juice, or as fruits helps in Jaundice. It has antioxidants which release the toxins from the body and helps in detoxing.
7) The presence of Iodine and Magnesium helps in proper functioning of Thyroid glands.
8) Water chestnut is rich in minerals, manganese and vitamins which helps in healing of the cracked heals.
9) For Eczema dried singhara mixed with lemon juice and applied daily on the effected area cures it.
10) Singhara is constipating, hence helpful in curing loose motions.

The benefits list is long. But what is the right amount of singhara to be eaten? Some pointers need to be taken care of before consuming this wonder fruit:
1) Singhara is heavy to digest. It should not be eaten in excess else bloating and stomach pain can be observed.
2) Around 10-20 gm of Singhara can be eaten on a daily basis(till the fruit is available in the market) , and if feel heavy to digest reduce the quantity.
3) If constipation is already a worry, then do not eat it. Its helpful in case of loose motions, but can increase the problem of constipation further if consumed.
4) Regular eating of Singhara can lead to increase in weight.
5) Do not drink water immediately after eating Singhara, wait for few minutes.

As said, "Ati Sarvatra varjayete", hence anything consumed in moderation is a boon, while extreme always harms, So Singhara or Water Chestnut when eaten moderately will benefit us. This cheap nutritious fruit is so in reach of everyone and easy to consume, grab its nutrition before it disappear from the sight.

In the Indian households its a common practice to eat Lotus Seed, called as (Makhana in Hindi) either raw or roasted, sometimes its used as dry fruit, sometimes as snack, whichever way, it was always in my liked items list as I was a pathetically fussy eater right from my childhood days. This fussy eating trait exists in both me and Mr. Hubby, and hence have carried forward in my daughter too. Well in current scenario,I am at better place as gradually almost every vegetarian item cooked at home has made its place in my stomach, but Mr. Hubby is still laid back.
Makhana is something which everyone likes in both of my families ( parents, & in-laws). Few months back I was in search of some healthy snack items for my kid as she was so inclined towards Haldiram's Aloo Bhujia that having lunch went to second priority for her. In this situation, I scratched my brain and used my childhood memories of having roasted Makhana whenever we came back from playing or other activities. Earlier she refused it, but I kept on roasting it and all of us (family members) eating infront of her, which made her to atleast try. Finally after  month long efforts, she is fond of Makhana, at any time she can eat it. whenever she comes back from her dance class, or park, or while she is doing her homework a little box of freshly roasted Makhana is right infront of her to munch upon. This newly liked snack has eased up my worries of Aloo Bhujia , chocolates or any other unhealthy item to be munched upon. That's said 'Tummy khush, Baby khush, and mummy Superkhush '.

Since kid was eating them on a regular basis , so the mommy in me sprang in action to find out what all nutrients I am giving to my kid. The results are astonishing. I am glad that my kid likes these beauties and getting healthy without any pleadings for food.
The benefits which I have found out are as listed:

BENEFITS of MAKHANA/LOTUS SEED:

1) Makhana are very light and hence easy to digest. Its health benefits are said to be more powerful than the other dry fruits including Almond, walnuts, cashewnut etc.

2)Eating makhana can help in weight loss. Whenever there is urge to eat, do munch upon a few, which in turn will make you full with essential nutrients thus curbing your appetite for unhealthy foods. They are low in calories but high on fibre, and of-course fibrous food is a boon to our body preventing constipation.
3) Makhana are rich in protein, carbohydrates, fibre, potassium, phosphorous, iron, zinc, and magnesium.

4) These are low in sodium content, and since magnesium is present naturally, Makhana are good for people suffering from heart diseases, high blood pressure and diabetes. Now I am going to make my parents eat these powerhouses on a daily basis.

5)Makhana have anti aging enzymes which in turn helps in repairing damaged proteins in the body.So its like ageing can be slowed down with all the goodness of Makhanas.

6) Due to its calming properties , it helps in better sleep. Being light , it will not harm to eat a few before retiring for the day.

The best way to eat Makhana is the roasted way, as even I don't like the raw ones. Here comes the easy-peasy, ready within minutes recipe.
Recipe for Roasted Lotus Seed/Makhana:
1) Heat a heavy bottomed pan ( Iron kadhai is best), put 1-2 tablespoons of clarified butter (Ghee), once warm pour Makhana in the hot pan, and stir them evenly for just 5-10 minutes on a low flame, else the Makhanas will stick to the bottom and spoil.
2) I sprinkle some Rock salt (Sendha Namak in Hindi) on these roasted Makhanas. Tadaa, the tasty snacks for everyone is ready.

Since I am using Rock salt instead of table salt, it becomes important to list its beneficial properties .
There are so many benefits of Rock salt which needs a different post to cover up. Making an attempt to list some of its benefits here in context of using it in daily life.

1)The Rock salt is healthier than the table salt  as it has natural iodine which is good for health while the table salts are iodised artificially and have high sodium chloride which in long run is harmful to human system.
2)Due to the goodness of Rock salt, we have replaced the sea salt with it and don't find any difference in taste of food items. Rock salt has always been used in raitas, and chaats. It helps in digestion.

3)Since rock salt is full of natural earthly minerals, it boosts the immunity of human body.

For other benefits will soon post a detailed writeup in coming days.
Till then enjoy Makhanas aka Lotus Seed.

I have been an on/off kind of blogger since year 2013, used to write some important events, memories, and whatever made me to express my views. It was kind of secretive writing, mostly kind of managing an online journal of nick nacks happening with me. Never shared the blog publicly except to few near and dear friends. But this year, recently I have given a thought to make my blog full-time instead of writing occasionally. Reason for this thought is just that "I love to write". I do understand the fact that I am not a very talented person to do so as every next person owns a blog on the internet, and this very thought always stopped me from making my blogspace public as I always wanted to have some unique content to write upon. Lately I have realised every content is new if it has your own words instead of just copy and paste which happens at many places. Going for examples its similar to cooking, if a dish is cooked and invented once, will it not be modified or recooked , does it makes the dish less unique since its not prepared by the original Chef. Ofcourse not. So here I inaugurate my blog to the long list of mommy bloggers on the internet. Hopeful that I will do justice to this space and my readers.

Coming back to the point, While I was customising my blog-space 'Zindagi Everyday' I faced lot many problems which I had to google out, or search on You tube. Some were simple, and some I never even thought of. In customisation I had to redesign my existing blog to a whole new one, so that me and my readers feel a sense of freshness and in return I may get inspired to write regularly. While doing so, I came through terms like SEO, Search Engine Optimisation which I never used. As my blog was not optimised, it was not listed on google search, which means google didn't even knew that this blog of mine existed. OMG, that's why I never got any reader even by mistake. But now, I have understood the basics and applied the same to my blog-space,thanks to YouTube & Google.

Now coming to the important part, I am going to share my learning of customising the blog along with a little bit of SEO here, hopefully someone may find it useful . For this I will post a series on Blogger, right from how to start a blog, how to edit, how to link, how to label, submit sitemap, google adsense , etc etc till SEO basics.

Sharing is Caring.

Everyday its the same story, either this or that tantrum, activity, attitude, blah blah (the list is endless) will trigger my anger button ON, and kaboom, there I am all yelling and scolding the little one. And what happens after that, its something which most parents can relate to, yes right the pathetic guilt feeling. When the senses are back to normal after the anger session, the very first question which pops in my head is, what did she do wrong, she is just a kid who wants to do something which is neither harming anyone nor difficult to execute. So why was there so much anger and what impact it would have caused on the little innocent mind of hers. At times I doubt if I am seriously a mommy material? I think this is high time for introspection to deal with this ANGER issue as its not healthy to anyone specially the little one.

What impact does this anger causes on the mind of little kids , well as per my experience with my little one, she becomes sad that mamma is scolding and not allowing to do what she want, here not to forget her demand is fully logical and not out of the universe to fulfil. Her small demands are like she want to paint while its sleeping time, she want to do craft while its her study time and so on. Now the question arises why did I suppress her logical demand, my stubbornness is all I can think about as the culprit. As a mother what I am trying to do is impose my rules, my timelines, my choices and my routine on her, and when I see those not getting followed I just loose my temper. After a heated session, when I sit down to analyse why couldn't I accommodate her so simple demands, I found myself to be guilty.  I missed out to apprehend that the child is also an individual with its own set of thoughts and choices. This is the stage where they are learning lifeskills, and surrender is ofcourse not a very good skill to practice.

No routine should be strong enough to suppress kids. As a parent I need to be flexible with my child. And since we both ( mom and the kid) are stubborn at our own fronts so my kid also knows how to get the demand done, the way is just go to grandparents and all well, phew can't hold her back then.
The other reasons of Anger issues arise when the demands are totally illogical. Yes illogical demands are also there which are just out of mind at times like want to go to shopping mall just now, want to go to buy toys just now or struck upon a particular toy, want that set of crayons even though previous ones are lying untouched at home. See these kinds of demand make parenting real mess. Giving in to those will result in getting her use to throw such tantrums on a regular basis, and if not giving in, then no other distraction is working well. Sometimes I have to give up (family pressure) , since I am a strict mother at these instances but can't help out when others too interfere. So my way to get through that situation is ok let me do what she says, and once she is calm we talk out the whole scenario ( my girl is 5 years old now and have good conversations), where I try to make the kid realise that its not good to throw tantrums as mamma-papa already fulfil her demands every now and then. Honestly, I am no saint so I do have my share of anger and yelling in this tantrum situation, but then the wise me awakes and asks me to just hold the child and love her, just calm her by any means. Finally when things are manageable , we sort out the tantrum, in the hope that it will not be repeated again in near future. Luckily my girl understands me and obeys till she want :)

In both the above mentioned situations, I never wanted to show my anger to the poor kid, but emotions are hard to deal with. The other suggested way includes just walk away from the situation, or keep mum for sometime ignoring the things which are raising the anger bar. For me it doesn't work, I want my kid to understand that what she is demanding is not fitting in the routine and should not be done. I do talk to my kid while keeping my anger in check. And finally when I am about to burst I go mum and walk away. In this way my kid is aware that something is not right to be done. Now the situation is passe, so whats our makeup part, its simple recipe, both mamma and baby go to park, play around and things are refreshed.
Well every child is unique and so every parent have their own tried and tested ways to deal with their anger issues and is commendable.

Some of the situations which trigger my anger also includes scarcity of my ME time, yes its very important for me to have my peace of mind while juggling between parenting, home management, teaching and so on, the list is endless. So how do I get my ME time without harming my kid's emotions and psyche are, engage the kid in something she loves to do, once she get engaged I get time for myself. Though there will be something or the other kid needs me to do for her, but is still manageable as compared to a total NO ME Time.

In all the scenarios mentioned above, either one of us who is in a better temperament ( me or my husband) become in-charge of the kid to rescue her from being the victim of anger at the moment, in the meantime anger subsides and the heart is filled with a genuine apology to the kid. Joint families are really a boon in these tricky situations when we can really take a deep breath and let it go, while our child is in safe hands.

These are some of my experiences with Anger triggers and managing the same, believe me I am trying to improve it everyday. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I fail. We are humans and bound to err. As I always say we( me, my husband, and my daughter) are growing together, she as an individual and we as parents. Who said Parenting is easy, its a lifelong process of learning. Happy parenting to all the wonderful families out there reading my blogspace 'Zindagi Everyday'.
Do comment your ways to deal with the anger, would love to try them out.
